The area

For those interested in WWI and II the area is steeped in history. It is close to Dunkirk, Calais and some of the major batle fields. There are strong reminders of WWI especially around La Panne, see http://www.flandersfields.be/en

La Panne is also the place where Leopold, Queen Victoria's uncle, arrived to Belgium from England to become the first king of the nascent kingdom of Belgium founded in 1830. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Leopold-I-king-of-Belgium
